7 Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain is the most common complaint at our Malad clinic. The cause decides the treatment, so here are the seven we see most often.

The seven causes

1) Osteoarthritis - stiffness and pain on stairs. 2) Meniscus tear - clicking and locking after twisting. 3) Ligament injury (ACL/MCL) - giving way after sports. 4) Patellofemoral pain - front-knee pain on sitting long. 5) Bursitis - swelling in front of the knee. 6) Tendinitis - pain below the kneecap in runners. 7) Gout or infection - sudden hot, red, swollen knee.

What to do

Rest, ice and simple pain relief for 1-2 weeks is reasonable for mild pain. Locking, giving way, large swelling or fever need prompt review.
